The existing Courcelette Public School will undergo renovations and receive a two-storey addition. The school is operating over capacity and has three portables on site. The capacity of the existing facility is 196 pupil places; once the project is completed the capacity will increase to 325 pupil places. The portables will be removed once addition is complete, allowing for use of entire site for outdoor activities.

The addition will be located at the southwest corner of the site and will include 7 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, a resource room, a staff room, and an elevator. Renovations in the existing building will include new washrooms on both levels, gym storage and change rooms, and an expanded main office. The project will also address renewal needs and include replacement of deteriorated finishes, millwork, and building systems in existing corridors and classrooms.

Site improvements will include site modifications to accommodate the addition including a modified and repaved parking lot, hard and soft surface play areas, kindergarten playground, and an outdoor classroom.

The project will be phased to allow the school to remain operational throughout the construction process.

Background

November 2016: The Ministry of Education (EDU) approved Capital Priorities funding for a classroom and childcare addition, plus associated renovations to the existing building.

October 2018: During the design process it was recognized that due to size constraints, the site would not be able to support the addition of childcare spaces. Upon approval from EDU, the allocated childcare funds were transferred to Birch Cliff PS to ensure that the childcare spaces would be provided to the community.

February 2019 – October 2020: New design options were explored and reviewed through a community consultation process. Feedback provided indicated that there was a strong preference from the community for the addition to be located on the northeast side of the existing building to preserve play space on the site. A revised business case for additional funding was submitted to EDU, which was ultimately not approved.

June 2021 - 2022: TDSB, in consultation with the school community, agreed to proceed with development of the project as per original funding approval. A new consultant team was engaged to develop the project.

2023 - 2025: TDSB staff and the consultant team engaged in discussion with the City as part of the Site Plan Control process. As of April 2025, the application package has been deemed complete and is being reviewed by various City departments.

Objectives

Once completed the school community will benefit from the following:

• An expanded and renewed school facility that will meet enrollment needs and enhance the educational experience.
• An addition that will provide the required classrooms to accommodate all students without portables.
• Improvements to existing building systems and finishes in alignment with the addition to create a welcoming and unified environment.
• A fully accessible school including a new elevator for access to both floors, level entrances with automatic door operators, new washrooms including accessible universal washroom.
