What to expect from the program

This program delivers 13 weeks of paid, full-time training: seven weeks of specialized employment skills training + six weeks in a job placement. Only young adults who are out of school and not employed on a full-time basis are eligible for Youth in Trades.

Culinary Skills Training

Seven weeks of hands-on employment skills training in the kitchen under an experienced chef-instructor. Learners will earn minimum wage during training. 
Topics that will be covered as well as the certifications learners can obtain through the culinary training stream: 

  • Sterilization, Food Safety & Allergens 
  • Menu and Food Preparation 
  • µþ²¹°ì¾±²Ô²µÌý
  • Knife Skills 
  • Nutrition and Dietary Restriction 

In addition, the youth will obtain Food Handlers Certification, WHMIS/Health & Safety training. 

Construction Skills Training

Seven weeks of hands-on training in a workshop setting under an experienced Construction/Trades professional. Learners will earn minimum wage during training. 
Topics that will be covered as well as other certifications and supports that learners can gain through the construction training stream: 

  • Tool Safety 
  • Measurements and Conversions 
  • ¹ó°ù²¹³¾¾±²Ô²µÌý
  • ¶Ù°ù²â·É²¹±ô±ôÌý
  • Tiling and laminate floors 
  • ±Ê±ô³Ü³¾²ú¾±²Ô²µÌý
  • ±Ê±ô²¹²õ³Ù±ð°ù¾±²Ô²µÌý
  • ±Ê²¹¾±²Ô³Ù¾±²Ô²µÌý

Youth will also obtain Working at Heights Certification, WHMIS, and Worker Health and Safety in Four Steps. Elevator Work Platform and Skid Steer training will be provided. 

Job Development for All Learners

Regardless of stream, all learners will be trained in group-based life skills and employment skills workshops to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. Learners will also receive training in: 

  • Resume writing 
  • Job search 
  • Professional use of social media 
  • Interview Skills 
  • Job Maintenance 
  • Labour Marketing Information 
  • Financial Literacy 
  • Aggression Replacement 

Is Youth in Trades right for you?

The Youth in Trades program is designed to support youth and young adults facing multiple barriers. You may be a good fit for this program if you are: 

  • Seeking full-time employment 
  • Aged between 15 and 30 years old at the time of registration; must be out of school and out of work 
  • A Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or a protected person as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act 
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada 

We welcome Indigenous, Black and other racialized youth and individuals; members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community; as well as youth and individuals with disabilities; who are early leavers from high school; living in low-income households; experiencing houselessness or precarious housing; or living in rural, remote, Northern or fly-in communities.
